The actor George Clooney join this movie “The American” shot past rivals at the box office over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The movie drama, in which George Clooney stars as an American assassin taking a breather in Italy after a botched job in Sweden, is estimated to have grossed just under $13 million from Friday to Sunday.The movie was opened on Wednesday to get a two day head start on its competition, has currently grossed $16.1 million since its debut and is expected to pull in $20 million in total by Monday.

The president of Hollywood.com Box Office said: “George Clooney represents further proof that actors need not be young to be cool and appealing to audiences. There is something in the air and the power has seemingly shifted from the young guns to the old guard and one need only look at the success of “The American,” “The Expendables” and pop culture in general for the evidence.”

On the last week the top grossing film, Sony Screen Gems’ “Takers,” came in just behind “The American,” with an estimated $11.5 million, for a cumulative gross of $37.9 million after two weeks.The top five were 20th Century Fox’s gory Robert Rodriguez vehicle “Machete,” with $11.3 million, Lionsgate’s “The Last Exorcism,” with $7.6 million , and Warner Bros.’ Drew Barrymore and Justin Long romantic comedy “Going the Distance,” which grossed a disappointing $6.9 million.

Alone among assassins, Jack is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell.

The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde, is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.
