Oxford University scientists found  that taking vitamin B cam slow the rate at which the brain shrank in elderly people who had trouble remembering things. Vitamins B6 and B12, as well as folic acid, lower the levels of an amino acid called homocysteine that is linked to brain cells damage similar to that seen in Alzheimer’s.

According to the study published today in PLoS One, a publication of the Public Library of Science, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, said that the highest level of homocysteine in their blood showed the most benefit.

A study of 340 patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease, was published in 2008 by the Journal of The American Medical Association, and they found no difference in the decline of patients memory, attention, language and orientation amoing people with mild to moderate forms of this disease.Chairman of the U.K. Medical Research Council’s Neurosicences and Mental Health Board Chris Kennard said in a statement:”Further research is required before we can recommend the supplement as a treatment for neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.”

In a Oxford study included 168 people aged at least 70 with mild memory problems. And Half of them took high-dose vitamin B tablets for two years, and the rest were given a placebo. The researchers gauged the disease using magnetic resonance imaging technology to measure the rate at which the brain shrank, the study found those who took folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 had their brains shrink by 0.76 percent a year on average, while those on placebo had an atrophy rate of 1.08 percent.According to the researchers people over age 70, 1 in 6 people has trouble with memory, language, or other mental functions, the scientist said, half of those with some impairment develop dementia, mainly Alzheimer’s.
