by Alice Costello – All the residents of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu have been fleeing to higher ground after a powerful earthquake.

The earthquake generate a small tsunami of about nine inches.And the police say there are no reports of major damage or injuries from the wave or from the 7.5 magnitude quake.

The earthquake was strong enough to shake buildings in the capital and bring down power lines. And an official with the New Zealand High Commission in Vanuatu’s capital reports a number of aftershocks.

A spokesman from the police describes the quake as “very sharp” and he says it was the worst one he’s ever felt.Many people left the center of the capital and went to higher ground because of fears of a tsunami.And also the spokesman says all the communications were knocked out, but they are coming back now.
